The one exception, stated plainly: the first time you open the app it downloads its speech model — about 2.3 GB / about 500 MB, or 2.9 GB on a PC with an NVIDIA graphics card / about 450 MB / about 670 MB — once. That's the only time it uses the network. After that it never connects again.

Drag it to Applications
Open the download and drag Verbatim across. Then open it.

The first launch downloads the speech model — about 2.3 GB. It shows a progress window and only does this once.

Say yes to three permissions
Microphone to hear you, Accessibility to place the text, Input Monitoring to notice the hotkey. macOS asks for each.

Add the Verbatim keyboard
Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard…, then tap Verbatim under Third-Party Keyboards.

Turn on Allow Full Access
In the same list, tap Verbatim and turn on Allow Full Access. iOS requires it before a keyboard can talk to its own app, which is how the mic reaches the microphone. Nothing you type or say is sent anywhere.

Hold the 🌐 key and choose Verbatim. Tap the blue mic, speak, then tap the checkmark. In the Verbatim app itself, hold the mic to talk.

FAQ
Does it really work without the internet?
Yes. After the one-time model download on first launch, it never connects again — no update checks, no analytics, no usage reports. Turn the Wi-Fi off and it behaves identically.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app with a text cursor. Verbatim doesn't integrate with apps one by one — it types (on Mac) or pastes (on Windows) at the cursor, so email, chat, documents, browsers and forms all just work. Your text also goes to the clipboard.
Why do the desktop apps cost nothing?
They're free downloads from this page. There's no trial, no paid tier and nothing to unlock. The iPhone and iPad app is a one-time $0.99 purchase on the App Store.
Will it get my colleagues' names right?
Out of the box, sometimes not — no speech model knows every surname. Add them under Words and anything it hears that's close enough becomes your spelling. A colleague's surname is the single most useful thing you can put in there.
Can a phrase fire by accident?
Phrases only fire on the whole phrase, matched exactly. Pick a trigger you wouldn't say by accident: “my email address” is a good one; “email” is not.
Does it run on an Intel Mac?
No. The Mac app needs Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 13 or later.
Why does Windows warn me when I first open it?
The Windows build isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen says the publisher is unknown. Choose More info, then Run anyway. It asks once. The Mac build is signed and notarised by Apple.
Does Verbatim work on iPhone and iPad?
Yes. Verbatim for iPhone and iPad is on the App Store for a one-time US$0.99 (price varies by country). It needs iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, includes a keyboard you can dictate with in any app, has Words, Phrases and History, and transcribes on the device. The same purchase runs on Apple-silicon Macs.
Is Verbatim available on Android?
Not yet. Verbatim for Android is coming to Google Play.
